Conventional vs. Organic Coffee
Study after study has shown that the consumption of coffee has numerous health benefits. But when you drink coffee, it not only provides a much-needed jolt of energy, believe it or not, it also has an impact on the environment. We take our morning coffee for granted, but you’ve probably not considered where it came from, how it was grown, and even how the coffee farmers are treated.
In recent times, consumers are becoming more interested in choosing fresher, less-processed foods, and are therefore purchasing more ‘organic’ products. When it comes to coffee, is there truly a difference between the conventional brews and the ones that are considered organic? Let’s examine this further today, and perhaps you’ll want to try some for yourself.
Organic Coffee
Certified organic coffee is that which is produced according to strict environmental guidelines without any pesticides or herbicides. The beans are inspected and grown in a natural setting primarily under tree canopies, which supports local bird populations, the conservation of forests, and a healthy ecosystem. The coffee is grown using only organic fertilizers such as compost or manure, and the coffee plants’ soil, leaves, and beans are tested for any chemical residue. The chemical-free conditions ensure the safety of farmers, as they are not exposed to anything harmful, which also ultimately benefits the environment AND the consumer.
Conventional Coffee
With coffee being the second most traded commodity worldwide, farming methods of maximizing production have emerged over time. However, this may be at the expense of human and environmental health. Therefore, coffee that is not grown through organic methods is highly treated with chemicals, such as synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides. Farmers are unfortunately exposed to these chemicals during crop handling and harvest. Not only do the chemical residues in the water and air affect the health of these farming communities, but surrounding communities are affected as well.
Flavor
Organic coffee is generally lower in acid and caffeine than conventional coffee, which makes the beans richer in antioxidants that assist in reducing the risk of various diseases, and in improving dental health. Proponents of organic coffee find that it is more vibrant and flavorful than conventional coffee, that it has no chemical aftertaste, and is a little easier on your stomach.
