Often referred to as "The Treasure of the Caribbean," this organic coffee from Santo Domingo is definitely one of the best kept secrets of the region.

Many people in Santo Domingo make a living from the production of coffee, so strict measures are taken to ensure quality and standards are upheld. Most coffee is grown on small farms and is tended to by devoted farmers and their families who greatly benefit from its production.

The climate is ideal for coffee trees; the nearby ocean brings about cool trade winds and cloud cover that protects the trees from excessive sunlight and fosters a humid environment so the trees and the coffee cherries mature slowly. The unique tastes exhibited by the coffee come from the rich soil of the mountainous regions in which the trees are planted. Medium-bodied and well balanced, this gourmet coffee contains a unique complexity in each sip.

One Helluva Great Coffee—Organic or Not

First, I am not into organic anything. Use of pesticides or not, if different insects or other squiggly things invade coffee ranches then get rid of them using any means possible. And if it can be done without the use of dangerous pesticides then that is the best way possible. If not, then use them.

As to this Dominican Republic ‘Santo Domingo’ Coffee, another thing I have yet found to like is coffee grown in the Caribbean Sea or in Central or South America. I have tried several and can find NO nothing to like about them (excuse my double negative but it’s done for effect) and I thought never would.

But one of CoffeeAM’s Customer Service Representatives helped me he. I asked him, Raul, for a coffee from these three areas that had little or low acidity that was detectable and he came up with the Santo Domingo. So I purchased a one-half pound bag. WAS I SURPRISED.

Surprised by two things—First, that I was not led down the proverbial ‘garden path’; and secondly and most importantly, that this coffee, organic or not, was actually good. No, make that great. No, that’s not strong enough to describe this coffee. Make that it was and is fantastically, greatly, goodly, superbly, and happily great. And I mean every word!

Words alone cannot describe just how fantastic this coffee really is other than smooth, very low in acidity, medium bold (I like a coffee that is bold enough to keep a spoon standing vertically when inserted into the cup full of this coffee) and a coffee that does…
