In the 1600s, coffee beans traveled in cargo holds, sometimes for up to six months, from India to Europe on slow sailing ships; they were stowed away in wet, damp conditions with no access to fresh air or sunlight. By the time they arrived in Europe, they were swollen and yellowed; the Europeans, not knowing any different, brewed and enjoyed them. They loved the sweetly fermented brew that had intriguing earthy and well balanced flavors.
Since the beans are no longer subject to dark, long voyages across the sea, the conditions have been recreated. Monsooning is a 16-week, wet process method that recreates the conditions of a sea voyage to produce distinctive tasting coffee. At a medium roast, India Malabar 'Monsooned Voyage' is a very distinctive coffee that yields a top-grade brew. It is known for its light body, gentle tanginess, and mellow, soft flavor, and unforgettable aroma.

An amazing departure from the swill of the masses!

By Mac McClammy from Hampton Roads, Virginia on October 30, 2011
At the age of 56, I thought I was well qualified to judge coffee, or rather, what I personally preferred. I had grown up drinking the "joe" from the domestic red cans and blue cans. Then, the U.S. Air Force saw fit to station me in the Eifel region of Germany. There, wandering the walk platz of Kaiserslautern I was drawn to the numerous coffee houses, which were usually narrow establishments with standing room only. The tables were small, usually circular, free-standing affairs, without stools or chairs. One would stand at the tables, perhaps chatting with other clientele and consuming the most unbelievable coffees. The whole establishment smelled of fresh brewed coffees, a strong and pungent aroma. In fact, it was this aroma that would waft out to the cobble stone walking market and presents itself as a lure to passersby. It was in such a coffee shop where, not speaking much German, I inquired as best I could as to what wonderful coffee it was that I was smelling and might I have a cup. The proprietor, barely heard above the hustling about of customers and the constant clanking of coffee cups being served, filled, washed and stacked, offered me a large cup of India "monsooned" coffee. I did not at first understand what he had said as I was convinced he had not said "monsooned" as that obviously made no sense. But, I thought I had happened upon a coffee that made all coffees pale in comparison. A smell that just couldn't be "real" coffee. This coffee tasted nothing like the majority of coffees I had enjoyed before. The man at the coffee bar watched while I tasted the first sip, then made a subtle grin and went about his work confident that he had once again shown an American's don't know coffee. I was from that point a steadfast convert to the "monsooned" coffee from India. I just always assumed that he was trying to tell me that it had been over-watered while growing or some such. Upon returning to the US four years later, I was back in the land of drive-through coffees and made up Italian words. I was destined to pine away for the coffee shops of the German walk platz. As fate would happen, I was enjoying a visit to a family that I had served with in Germany. Upon entering their Woodbridge, VA home, that same aroma hit me! That aroma that I had remembered so well and longed to taste again. I was sure of it. Then came the coup de gras! Through the door came my hostess with the source of that aroma and as you have already deduced, it was precisely the brew I remembered from Germany! I have never had a more enjoyable cup of coffee! I begged her to tell me how she managed it? She said that as soon as they had returned to the states, they too went looking for that coffee from Wagner Strasse. A pursuit of coffee shops, cafes, and a survey of coffee roasters led them CoffeeAM. They showed me an unopened 5 lb bag of India Malabar "Monsooned Voyage" with the CoffeeAM logo. They honored me with the entire bag which I took home. I promptly went out and purchased a French press and a grinder. The house now smells of this most excellent coffee all the time. I take thermos' of this coffee to work with me everyday and the shear aroma and the tastes that I was forced to render up to co-workers has won over several. I have to say that anyone that has yet to try this coffee is still partaking of the swill of the masses. Little do they know that out there, probably on the southwest of India, some fine growers are taking extraordinary steps to offer them a superb alternative. And, CoffeeAM is delivering it right to their doors! All that's left is for them to order it try it! No need to thank me, just have another cup! I would recommend this item to a friend.

coffee smelt burnt

By Mike Moss from South Fulton, Tn on April 25, 2013
Not as good as the last 3 times i ordered the beans had a burnt smell and coffee taste harsh and bitter not even close to the quality of coffee that i have gotten in past. i have already sent you an email right after we opened the bag but did not get any reply.you asked if i would recommend this item to a friend i said no if the quality is not going to get back the way it was, then i would tell a friend. Not as smooth as other Indian Monsoon coffee i've bought

By cathy from lawrenceville, GA on April 15, 2013
Delivery and packaging were good. However, I usually purchase my Indian Monsoon coffee from the DeKalb Farmer's Market. They had been out of stock for a while so i went looking for another source. While drinkable, the Monsooned coffee I got from Coffee AM was not nearly as smooth as I'd bought from the farmer's market. I will not buy this type of coffee again from Coffee AM.Great low acid coffee.

Three Star Malabar

By Joanne from Greensboro, NC on August 30, 2011
The Malabar 'Monsooned Voyage' coffee arrived in good time and the beans looked right; a light sheen to them - a pretty fresh roast. Color of the brew is good with pleasant aromas. Characteristically a very smooth beverage the CoffeeAM product was smooth, but more tannic than expected. To the tongue; hardly acidic at all. The flavor is just not quite as full as it needs to be for a premium coffee. The classic smoked almond, woodsy aftertaste that is so desirable in the Monsooned beans was not as pronounced or long-lasting as hoped for. For the money a good value - use it at the office not home. This rating compares the CoffeeAM Monsooned To other Monsooned Malabars, not all other coffees. Compared to other coffees: four star.I would recommend this item to a friend.
